- Description: Kindle+ is paying you less for page reads. Audiobooks joined on OCt 22, Virtual Voice titles were pulled in automatically, and authors invested in ACX could feel it first. Your options before the mid-December KENP report, and why now is the time to test audiobook ads in-market.

Self-publishing news for Authors, originally posted on Noctuaforest.us, Oct 31st.

Welcome to our brand new parliament series.

This blog is an open space to report on and discuss headlines from the news stories that affect your bottom line as a self-published author together. These posts are designed to help you stay more independent and knowledgeable as an advantage on the KDP platform.

I am Tucker Briggs Robinson, and I write about advertising your books on a shoestring budget. I have spent the last decade working with enterprises to optimize performance during fast moving sales events like Prime Day, Black Friday, & Cyber Monday. Now I work independently with self-published authors as a fractional operator and coach for Sponsored ads.

Oct 22, 2026, Amazon motioned to rename Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ and added audiobooks for the US marketplace. Since August 28th, Amazon has opened up audiobooks along with eBooks & Print, to be advertised using Sponsored Product & Brand campaigns.

Evidently, AI-narrated "Virtual Voice" audiobooks are now automatically included in Kindle+ when the eBook is in KDP Select. For authors with dozens of published titles this can lead to a very frustrating backlog of fixes.

While we wait for the mid-December report on KENP (per-page rate) to come out for the first full month of Kindle+, the debate is whether the pot is split. Without a distinction, these changes could compound over time, and drastically lower income for those who have invested heavily into ACX.

I have seen those same authors now reporting that they are the most negatively impacted by this change. As of now, it seems Amazon is splitting royalties with all the eBooks that are using the voiceovers.

As a new rule, if you don't want your Virtual Voice audiobook in Kindle+, your only options are to unpublish it, or to just remove the eBook from KDP Select, but that is a major change in strategy for some.

Many authors have an audience who are sensitive to these changes and so it can feel like the options are limited. I have launched several new audiobook only campaigns for my partners, as an A/B test, and am seeing favorable returns in higher volume niches like kids' literature.

Test a small budget in sponsored product campaigns as an early bird advantage, before the costs rise from the wave of AI-generated slop titles, which will inevitably find their way into the ecosystem.

One other takeaway from this is that it's more important than ever to claim your author page if you haven't already. It's required to run audiobook ads at all, and is often an overlooked part of securing your brand.

On the Seller Central side, Amazon has started showing AI-generated product images in mobile search results, part of a wider pro-AI rollout.

Maintain your listings by scheduling a consistency check for your top sellers. By the end of the year the data will begin to show a clearer picture, but any decrease could compound over the coming months.
