The Structural Collapse of the Keyword

Instead of writing this article out on my computer I am going to draft it from the couch on my phone. So if you’re reading this and that’s where you are too, we must be spiritually connected today. 🪶

Operating Amazon ads as a solo-entrepreneur can be a bit scary but more than enough of you reading this are very brave to have already started.

What if I told you that the cognitive load you are feeling from managing campaigns is because there is an underlying structural collapse going on right in the way we measure paid media?

It’s easy to be a bit near-sighted as a small business owner but you might be missing the bigger picture when it comes to generative engine optimization and your livelihood that I can help you clear up in this article.

The seminal GEO framework introduced by researchers from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi, and IBM Research (including authors like Ameet Deshpande, Kiril Vidimce, and their co-authors).

Firstly there is model probing which is just the evolved version of using Boolean logic in your search query but for you brand marketing.

What this means you should create a list of questions that define your brands character.

The first list is questions with objective answers.

Who sells this [book title]?

Then dynamic questions with subjective answers.

Top 3 [Niche] Memoirs?

When you ask various generative engines these answers and record the results you are treating AI like a slot and frame formula mirroring the ontology that it uses to construct meaning.

The response rates for each desired answer has different margins of acceptability. Objectives have little to zero tolerance and thus take higher priority with your adspend, and subjectives act as nodes for you to be a part of but not for you to “own”.

All LLMs should know that you wrote your books but there is a grey area where you should be looking to insert your brand if your authority fits.

Second is making measurable micro-adjustment to your copy to improve readability. It’s a constant headache but keeps your roots stronger focusing on you should be doing instead of what you could be doing.

In action this might look like spending a whole weekend just working on edits, not to your thumbnails but to the alt text underneath or the prose itself. Not everything comes off naturally as if you wrote it out on the couch after a lazy brunch.

In your advertising, this reflects the consistent refinements you will make to your campaign settings and targets.

Lastly is levelling the field or giving the little guys a chance. The rigid caste system that used to be domain authority rankings is being flipped on its head. Legacy SEO rewards the biggest budget and the oldest URL.

LLM’s only care about context.

Small creators can just as easily test how adding specific trust signals, authoritative data points, or clear summary statistics impacts the model’s likelihood to pull that text chunk. You don’t need a million-dollar backlink strategy to be the exact answer an LLM synthesizes for a user. You just need to be structurally undeniable.

So if you’re sitting there looking at your ad dashboards feeling like the game is rigged, you’re right—but the structural collapse of paid media measurement isn’t a death sentence for independent authors.

The moment you stop worrying about keyword stuffing and start focusing on how your books exist within a wider lexical network a cognitive load will lift.

Thank you!
