Guidance

The Amazon ad console presents itself as a user-friendly interface, but beneath that veneer, it is a rigid, mechanical sorting system.

When an author says they are “targeting a keyword,” they might be referring to a Search Query, a Search Term, or a Keyword Target. In the algorithm, these are handled completely differently. Conflating them leads to misallocated budget and contaminated data.

Inside the Observatory, we do not guess. We treat the search bar not as a calculator, but as a dynamic linguistic system. We map the exact relationship between what a reader types and what they intend to buy, using our tests to extract clear signals from the noise.

This glossary is the technical foundation for our operations.

The Linguistics of Intent

The most common point of failure in paid media is fundamentally misreading the “Source of Traffic.” We categorize these components with clinical precision:

Search Query

The raw, human string of text the customer actually types into the search bar. This is unpredictable and unrefined intent.

Search Term

The specific combination of words the algorithm matches to that query.

Keyword Target

The exact mechanical input loaded into an ad-group to intercept the Search Term.

Negatives

The semantic boundaries we establish. By negatively targeting specific Brands, ASINs, Phrases, or Exact terms, we build “No-Fly Zones” to prevent budget bleed on irrelevant traffic.

The Taxonomy of Organization

We do not simply “run campaigns.” We organize intent through a strict hierarchy to ensure the account data remains readable at scale:

Portfolio

High-level containment used purely for budget caps and clean catalog reporting.

Campaign

The parent grouping that controls the daily budget and placement modifiers (e.g., Top of Search boosts).

Ad-Group

The child grouping within campaigns that dictates default bids and houses the specific targets and creatives.

The Diagnostic Metrics

We measure success mechanically through the stages of the Advertising Funnel. Looking at the wrong dial for the wrong stage means flying blind.

DPVR (Awareness)

Detail Page View Rate mechanically measures if the ad impression successfully drove the customer to consume the page content.

CTR (Consideration)

Clicks divided by Impressions. This gauges the semantic relevance of the ad to the search query.

CVR (Conversion)

Orders divided by Clicks. This diagnoses landing page efficacy and product alignment.

ROAS (Loyalty)

Revenue divided by Ad Spend. This measures series read-through, true efficiency, and the impact of ads on organic rank.

Advanced Execution

For the Night Owls ready to move beyond basic bidding, the Observatory utilizes enterprise frameworks to parse intent and scale efficiency:

N-gram Analysis

Grouping your search terms by word count — one word (unigram), two (bigram), three (trigram), four or more (quadgram) — to find which length actually converts. For books it is usually the trigram, where a reader has named a genre, a trope, and a qualifier in one query.

Dayparting

Concentrating ad spend strictly during the specific daily windows when a category historically converts.

AMC (Amazon Marketing Cloud)

The enterprise environment required to access hourly conversion data and map Multi-touch Attribution (MTA).

DSP (Demand-Side Platform)

The programmatic tool used to secure off-console placements across Amazon’s Owned & Operated properties (Twitch, Prime Video) and the wider web.

Glossaries:

ASIN

Amazon Standard Identification Number. The unique identifier for your product.

SERP

Search Engine Results Page. The primary battlefield where customer Queries meet your Keyword Targets.

BSR

Best Seller Rank. The ultimate velocity metric. We utilize ads specifically to manipulate BSR and secure organic positioning.

A+ Content

Enhanced brand content on a landing page. It is the primary lever for moving your Conversion Rate (CVR).

Buy Box

The “Add to Cart” or “Buy Now” section of a landing page.

Targeting & Match Type

Broad Match

The algorithm captures queries containing your target words in any order, along with additional words before, within, or after. Best for harvesting new semantic variations.

Phrase Match

The algorithm locks the sequence of your target words, only allowing additional words before or after the phrase.

Exact Match

The algorithm only triggers for the exact target or its close plural/singular variant. Used for surgical bid control.

Close Match (Auto)

Amazon matches your ad to search queries highly relevant to your metadata.

Loose Match (Auto)

Amazon matches your ad to search queries with broad, tangential relevance to your metadata.

Substitutes (Auto)

Amazon places your ad on the pages of ASINs that directly compete with yours.

Complementary (Auto)

Amazon places your ad on the pages of ASINs frequently purchased alongside yours.

Placement

The physical location of the ad: Top-of-Search (TOS), Rest-of-Search (ROS), Product Pages, or the Homepage.

Audience & Bidding

Segments

A partition of an audience grouped by shared behavioral qualities.

Lifestyle

Audience segments based on behavioral likelihoods. This carries the least direct intent but offers the most scale.

In-Market

Highly motivated customers refined by recent category browsing and firmographics.

Dynamic Bids (Down Only)

The algorithm lowers your bid in real-time for auctions mathematically unlikely to convert. This is the conservative default setting.

Dynamic Bids (Up and Down)

The algorithm can raise your bid by up to 100% for high-intent auctions. This is the aggressive scaling gear.

Fixed Bids

The algorithm uses your exact input for every auction. Used to lock down variables during account audits.

Performance

KENP

Kindle Edition Normalized Pages. The primary revenue engine for KDP Select authors.

Kindle Unlimited

Amazon’s subscription library. A borrow costs the reader nothing at the point of decision and pays the author from the KDP Select Global Fund by pages read rather than by unit sold. Critically, a borrow reports as zero sales, so it pays a royalty that the ACOS denominator cannot see.

KENP Rate

The per-page payout from the Global Fund, set monthly in arrears and historically moving in a band around $0.0040 to $0.0050. Because the fund is fixed and divided by total pages read across all participating titles, the rate is a consequence of everyone else’s readership as well as your own. Treat it as a variable you look up, never as a constant.

Royalty

What actually reaches you per unit, as distinct from list price. An ebook on the 70% tier pays 70% of list minus a delivery fee scaled to file size; the 35% tier pays 35% with no delivery deduction; paperback pays 60% of list minus print cost. Every break-even calculation starts here, because ACOS and CPC ceilings are derived from royalty rather than revenue.

Read-Through

The mathematical rate at which a customer purchases Book 2 after finishing Book 1.

CPC

Cost per Click. Assesses the financial rate at which you win targeting auctions.

CPM

Cost Per Mille (thousand impressions). The alternative billing model to CPC, typically used in high-funnel display advertising.

ACOS

Advertising Cost of Sale. Ad Spend divided by Ad Revenue. The metric for individual campaign efficiency.

TACOS

Total Advertising Cost of Sale. Total Ad Spend divided by Total Revenue. The fundamental metric for measuring account health and organic velocity.

NTB

New-to-Brand. A metric identifying if a customer has purchased from your pen name in the last 12 months. Essential for diagnosing the Loyalty phase.

Last-Touch Attribution

The standard Amazon Console model where the absolute last ad clicked receives 100% of the credit for the sale.

When the Amazon Algorithm Turns Hostile
They are wrong. You can re-rank old books without spending a fortune, and your back catalog is actually your greatest entrepreneurial strength.
Getting "Best Seller" Badging Usually Ends up Like This for New Authors
There is a specific kind of adrenaline—and subsequent dread—that comes with watching the purchases roll in for the first time when you launch a new campaign.
